A buffer solution is a solution of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base and its conjugate acid. In analytical chemistry applications, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) typically uses buffer solutions if the sample contains acidic or basic functional groups. These buffer solutions mitigate the effects of hydrogen/hydrated hydrogen and hydroxide ions, thereby reducing pH fluctuations.
